With the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max release earlier this week, Apple low-key dropped a bombshell that gamers were quick to notice. They showed footage of their newest flagship device playing a couple of AAA games, Resident Evil 4 & Village, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, and Death Stranding, all smoothly at presumably 30FPS. This is a huge claim, because all of these games are either pretty recent (oldest being Death Stranding, a 2019 game) or even unreleased on consoles and PC (Assassin’s Creed releases next month)!
Moblie gaming overall has taken the world by storm in the recent years. It’s by far the most profitable form of gaming (mostly due to in game microtransactions and the cost to develop mobile games are a lot cheaper) and every year takes a huge step. We’ve seen huge gaming IPs like Call of Duty, Pokemon, and League of Legends all dip their toes into the mobile gaming pool. Games like Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail all have a huge following of mobile players and make an insane amount of money. It’s not as looked down upon as it as been in the past, as major gaming companies are investing time and effort in promoting their games, with constant new updates/improvements and even e-sports tournaments.
However, if even AAA games that are meant for console and PCs can run at a playable state on mobile phones, then I think mobile gaming is about to take a huge step in the industry. REDMAGIC, who are one of the better known gaming phone creators also showcased yesterday that their device can run Cyberpunk 2077. Yes, THE Cyberpunk that many PC enthusists use to benchmark test their newest GPUs. While it doesn’t look playable due to its very low FPS, the fact that it can even run such a highly intensive game at 14FPS is impressive on it’s own. There are a lot of people out their with gaming PCs that have trouble running this game smoothly.
As someone that games on mobile from time to time, I’m really excited to see where we go from here. Do you guys think we’ll see AAA game releases on mobile 5 years from now?
