The new MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 has officially arrived, and naturally, comparisons with the MacBook Air M4 are popping up everywhere. So, what’s really different?
Honestly, aside from the chip upgrade and a noticeable price jump, there isn’t a huge leap. Benchmarks do show the M5 is about 140% faster than the M4, but that’s pretty much what you’d expect from any new generation.
So, is it worth upgrading from an M4? Personally, I’d say probably not, unless you’ve got the budget and love having the very latest Apple hardware.
If you’re still rocking an M1, though, an upgrade could make sense, but many are still perfectly happy with their M1s, which handle everyday tasks without a hitch.
Looking ahead, the MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 is expected in 2026, and it will likely outpace the 14-inch M5, especially with the option to customize specs.
At the end of the day, the choice is yours:
Stick with your MacBook Air or Pro M4

Grab the new MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 (2025)

Wait for the MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 (2026)
What would you do if you were thinking of upgrading today?
