Let me start with a story, because this review didn’t happen the typical way.
A friend of mine from church had a daughter living abroad who sent her a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra as a gift. The problem? It arrived carrier-locked. Since I’m a cell phone technician, she brought it to me to unlock it. After getting it sorted out, my friend had to travel for 3 months — and she left the phone with me. So for 3 solid months, this became my daily driver. Every call, every photo, every late-night YouTube session — all on the S25 Ultra. This is that review.

📱 FIRST IMPRESSIONS & DESIGN
Picking this phone up for the first time, the build quality is immediately undeniable. Samsung went with a titanium frame — similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 15 Pro line — and it works. The phone feels premium and solid without being brutally heavy. The corners are more rounded than the S24 Ultra, which makes it noticeably more comfortable to hold during long calls or scrolling sessions.
The display is flat this time around (no more curved edges), and honestly? It’s better. The 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate is one of the best screens I’ve ever had in my hand. Colors are vivid, blacks are deep, and outdoor visibility is excellent. If there’s one thing Samsung consistently gets right, it’s their displays, and this is no exception.
However — and I’ll be honest here — compared to the S24 Ultra, the design changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary. If you’re coming from the S24 Ultra, you might feel like Samsung didn’t try hard enough this generation. The changes are real but subtle.

⚡ PERFORMANCE
Inside, the S25 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy — a custom overclocked version just for Samsung. It’s paired with 12GB of RAM. In daily use, this phone is absolutely smooth. Apps open instantly, multitasking is effortless, and I never experienced lag or stuttering during the 3 months I used it.
Gaming is excellent too. I tested several demanding titles and the phone handled them without breaking a sweat. One thing worth noting though: the phone does run warm under sustained load. Not dangerously hot, but you’ll feel it. Samsung has made improvements to heat management, but it’s still something to be aware of if you’re a heavy gamer.
The benchmark scores back up real-world performance — this is one of the fastest Android phones available right now, full stop.

📸 CAMERAS
This is where things get interesting, and where I have a slightly mixed opinion.
The camera system includes:
- 200MP main wide-angle lens (f/1.7)
- 50MP ultra-wide (f/1.9) — upgraded from previous gen
- 50MP 5x optical zoom telephoto
- 10MP 3x optical zoom telephoto
- 12MP selfie camera
In good lighting, the results are stunning. The 200MP sensor captures extraordinary detail, and the 5x and 10x zoom shots are genuinely impressive for a smartphone. The new 50MP ultra-wide is a real upgrade over the S24 Ultra’s — more detail, better edge sharpness, and improved macro capability.
However, there’s a nuance here that I noticed during my daily use: sometimes the phone’s AI processing can over-smooth images, especially skin tones in portraits. It can look great in social media posts, but if you want hyper-realistic, true-to-life photos, you might find yourself turning off some AI processing manually.
Video is a strong point. The phone now supports Log video recording (similar to what we saw come to iPhone 15 Pro), which is fantastic for anyone who does post-production editing. The stabilization is solid, and 4K at 120fps is available — something most smartphones still can’t offer.
For comparison, in my personal experience the S25 Ultra holds its own against the iPhone 16 Pro Max in most scenarios, though Apple still edges it slightly in video color science and skin tone accuracy.

🔋 BATTERY & CHARGING
The S25 Ultra houses a 5,000mAh battery, and in daily real-world use, I consistently got through a full day with charge to spare. On lighter days, I’d easily push into a second day before needing to plug in. For a phone with a QHD+ display running at 120Hz, that’s genuinely impressive stamina.
Charging maxes out at 45W wired — and here’s where Samsung takes a small hit in 2025. While 45W is fast enough (0 to ~65% in 30 minutes), competitors from China offer 80W, 100W, or even 120W charging. It’s a limitation Samsung seems to have no urgency to fix, and it’s a legitimate complaint.
Wireless charging is supported via Qi2 with a compatible case, which is a nice touch. Reverse wireless charging is also there at 4.5W, useful for charging accessories.

🖊️ S PEN
The S Pen is still here, built into the body. I’ll be transparent: I’m not a heavy stylus user, but I did experiment with it during these 3 months. For note-taking, quick sketches, and precise selections when editing photos, it’s genuinely useful. The integration with One UI 7 makes it more functional than ever.
That said, one thing I noticed (and that others have mentioned) is that certain functions that existed in older S Pen versions — like Air Actions using the button — have been reduced or removed. If you were a power S Pen user with a previous Ultra, this might feel like a step back.

🤖 ONE UI 7 & GALAXY AI
Samsung ships One UI 7 on the S25 Ultra, built on Android 15. It’s a clean, polished experience. Galaxy AI features are heavily marketed — things like Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist, and more. In honest terms? About 80% of these AI features are things most of us will use occasionally rather than daily. They work, they’re smart, but don’t expect them to change your life overnight.
Samsung promises 7 years of OS updates for the S25 Ultra, which is excellent and gives buyers long-term peace of mind.

✅ WHAT I LOVED
- World-class display — one of the best screens on any phone
- Snapdragon 8 Elite performance, zero daily lag
- Outstanding zoom camera system (5x and 10x are genuinely useful)
- Excellent battery life for a flagship
- Flat display is more comfortable and practical
- 7 years of software support
- Build quality: titanium + Gorilla Armor 2 glass
❌ WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE
- 45W charging in 2025 is starting to feel dated
- Design feels like a modest upgrade from S24 Ultra
- Some AI photo processing can be too aggressive
- S Pen lost some functionality compared to older generations
- Price: starting at $1,299, it’s a premium you really need to justify

🎯 FINAL VERDICT
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is, without question, a great phone. It’s fast, it shoots beautiful photos, it has an incredible screen, and it’ll last you years with consistent software support. But — and this is the real conversation — it’s a great phone that doesn’t feel dramatically different from last year’s model.
If you’re coming from an S23 Ultra or older, this is a meaningful upgrade and you’ll feel it every day. If you’re on the S24 Ultra, the case for upgrading is thin.
For me personally, 3 months with this phone as my daily driver left me genuinely impressed — and genuinely wishing the charging speed was faster. When my friend came back and took her phone home, I’ll admit I missed it a little.
Is it the best Android phone right now? Possibly. Is it worth the price? That depends entirely on where you’re coming from.
