Hey everyone! I wanted to share my detailed review and initial impressions of the brand-new, Android-based Magcubic HY450MAX projector.
My main goal was to find a projector running a true Android OS that could seamlessly handle my local movie library via the Plex app. My previous projector ran a proprietary OS and struggled heavily with Plex, so I had high hopes for this model.
Here is my breakdown of the unboxing, setup, and pros/cons after putting it to the test.
1. Unboxing & Build Quality
Out of the box, the projector is nicely wrapped and packaged. It includes:
A detailed, relatively thick user manual.
A reasonably long power cable.
A compact, lightweight remote control.
The projector itself has a very solid, premium feel. It has some weight to it, and you can immediately tell it is constructed from high-quality, sturdy plastic rather than feeling cheap. The back features essential ports, including USB and HDMI for external connections.
2. Setup and Smart Calibration
The initial setup is incredibly quick and painless.
Auto-Calibration: It automatically adjusts and finds the perfect image size for your wall.
Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance: Under the settings, you can enable this feature. If there are objects in the way, the projector intelligently shrinks and adjusts the picture to keep your screen clear and unobstructed.
3. Picture and Sound Performance
Colors & Brightness: The colors on this projector are absolutely beautiful and really “pop”.
Audio: The built-in speaker is surprisingly clear. However, adding a separate speaker would be a better choice, since fans are really loud.
Streaming Tests:
YouTube: Extremely sharp and bright video quality.
Plex: The installation was completely seamless. I’m happy to report it streams high-quality local files flawlessly with excellent picture and sound—it truly provides a genuine home cinema experience!
4. Minor Drawbacks (Areas for Improvement)
While I highly recommend this projector, there are a few minor quirks to keep in mind:
Unresponsive Air-Mouse: When you turn on air-mouse on the remote, it gets really sluggish and at times unresponsive, which I hope will be improved in future updates.
Netflix App: Unlike other streaming apps on the system, the Netflix app feels more like a browser-based wrap-around rather than a native TV app. It’s a bit slower and not quite as smooth to navigate as the other platforms.
Home Screen App Clutter: You cannot edit or remove the pre-installed app bookmarks at the bottom of the home screen. For example, I tried to uninstall/uncheck the Disney+ bookmark, but the system locked it as a permanent shortcut.
Bloatware: I was unable to uninstall certain pre-loaded apps like the Office Suite or the stock music app. I hope Magcubic rolls out a firmware update in the future to let users customize their home screen layout and clear up this clutter.
Final Verdict
Aside from those minor software suggestions, I am incredibly impressed with how easy this is to fine-tune. The menu settings are straightforward, the remote is super responsive, and the overall value for a true home theater experience is outstanding.
