Woohooo.
I have to say that I’m not huge into projectors and I’m just getting started in the field. I am mainly a gamer since the 90’s. Where refresh rate is king for the frames per second. I mainly sit in the dark and use blackout curtains along with using tin foil on my windows. So I can get almost pitch black rooms. (so if you’re looking for information on brightness of picture during day time, this review is not for you).
Ok, form factor. Not exactly a huge fan. It is nice and compact and I can palm the Boxe. (which is kind of useless as peoples hands vary in size). I do have to say that the color I am not a fan of. I would prefer it to be something like “prisonmate orange”. It does fit nice in a multitude of my backpacks. I have to say there would be better formfactors for traveling especially if you are wanting to bring a laptop along with the Boxe.
*btw this review is not as extensive as I would like, testing takes time.
The sound coming from the “onboard” speakers is fairly decent, especially considering the formfactor of the Boxe. It isnt’ as loud as I would like and fidelity leaves a lot to be desired. I have synced up a pair of wireless headphones via BT. I have not noticed any lag between screen and sound via BT. There is a bit of “muddiness” in the sound, but that could be the pair of headphones I am using.
Power. Well, leaves a lot to be desired. Originally they sent me the UK plug so I tried charging my Boxe with a USB-C cable and various chargers. It did not work on any of them. After contacting their support, they sent me an adapter from US to UK plug. While that works, I would prefer to have the regular US plug with no adapter. The plug is quite heavy and will unplug itself from an outlet when using the adapter. Anyway, after charging the Boxe, I have not attempted to see how long the battery lasts in real world conditions.
Operating System. leaves a lot to be desired but what it does do, it does well. As soon as the Boxe powered on and connected to my network. It performed an OS update. After the update, I was able to install some apps via Aptoide or however it’s spelled. Unfortunately, this is where I am severely disappointed. The amount of apps available via their service is severely limited. Mostly for movie/tv/steaming services. Personally, I wanted to install a music service and a music visualizer (projectM). Without going in depth and modifying a bunch of stuff or going into a bunch of settings, it is something i cannot do easily. It does work with Netflix, CrunchyRoll, and Plex with no problems. Actually, for some reason it was easier for me to set up plex on the Boxe than it was for me to set up Plex on my PS4.
Settings. There are quite a few settings that can be altered. Like screen position and positioning. (ie inverted, mirrored etc.) Without digging too deeply though, I did not see a way to alter the background. I like how easy it was to see if I needed to update the OS though.
Gaming. It does offer some games in the OS. But I was thinking about seeing if I could use Amazon’s Luna service and sync a controller to the Boxe. Haven’thad the time yet. Heck, mostly I’ve just been wirelessly streaming content. and have had nothing directly plugged into the Boxe.
Boxe, so far, gets the job done.
I will post updates to this later after more testing.
