Have you ever wondered if your phone gives you all it has or if it is holding back?
Well I did, and I have some answers
I did a some testing on my old mate 10 pro, as I wanted to know if it was suitable to still be used as little game/productivity machine, since it has desktop mode.
To make an easy and still comprehensive measurement I used Antutu benchmark,
With a baseline average score of around [250.000](tel:250000) points mixed, and with performance mode and no cooling you can get about [270.000](tel:270000) points, but the phone will almost catch on fire.
Then I put the phone in performance mode, ( which in this phone is very aggressive and completely removes thermal throttling) and cooled it with a Black shark Funcooler 2 pro and put it on some pc fans

Here I got an average score of around [335.000](tel:335000) points, which today is definitely not much, but considering the phone has the kirin 970 chip from 2017, it would have blown out every other competitor of that year and it is also really close to a snapdragon 765g, which is much newer and was put in new phones until last year

So to answer the initial question, yes, most phones hold back a lot for heat and power consumption reasons, and in this case there was a 25% to 30% increase in performance with sufficient cooling
To be clear, the phone was not modded or overlooked in any way, but I’ve seen overcooked phones with snapdragon 855 reaching 870 performances, but obviously this extreme perfomance gains can be obtained only with supplementary cooling, so very difficult to obtain but not impossible, as particular phones like the REDMAGIC 7s pro have active cooling.
