So, in case you missed it, @SprintingWorm posted an article the other day asking if anyone could identify the curious looking VR headset in the photo. While it was certainly interesting looking, my eye immediately went to the much more interesting looking phone sitting on his desk.
It was a BlackBerry Key2! I couldn’t believe it! A 5-year old phone just sitting there, clearly still used regularly by it’s incredibly awesome owner! What was even more interesting for me was that I literally bought one for myself just a few weeks ago! The Key2 is a device I have wanted to own ever since it came out, but never had the budget for one when they were around, and now that they can go for upwards of $2,000 on the third party market, I never thought I’d be able to get one.
Lo and behold, I found one that was well within my price range (full story to come in my “review” of it coming soon) and immediately jumped on it.
I won’t spoil my review on it just yet, but I will say that I’m still using it nearly a month later if that gives you any indication.
But that leads me to the reason for this post. As smartphones have gotten increasingly boring over the past few years (foldables notwithstanding), I’ve found myself longing for the days from a few years ago when smartphones were still different and exciting enough to still be interesting, so much so that I even challenge myself to use one for a while! See how well that went here.
Anyway, is there an older phone that’s still around that you’d be willing to try to use today? My Key2 is about 5 years old but I still enjoy using it for now. And thankfully I haven’t run into any usability issues with the software yet either (I can still access Google’s servers, download all my primary apps, etc) so we’ll see how much longer I can go.
Let me know what phone you’d want to try and use again!
