Ever since ‘wireless’ charging technology was announced, I’ve always found it a bit misleading. While it’s true that you aren’t plugging in a wire to your phone directly, the wireless charger itself must still be plugged in somewhere, which is still a wire that is tethering you to something and it’s a plug that is still taking up space in a socket.
Not only that, you can’t typically use your phone when it’s charging wirelessly or at least it’s much more inconvenient because you can’t pick it up to use it. So while I do appreciate it, it’s just always felt like more of a gimmick or a ‘nice-to-have’ feature instead of something I should expect or need to have in a flagship phone.
And wireless chargers don’t charge nearly as fast as wired chargers, which also doesn’t seem that important to me (check out my other post on the topic), so that’s another reason to not care as much.
I would say the only exception to all these above points is the somewhat recent rise of multi-device wireless chargers. Being able to charge multiple devices from one charging pad (the one I have can do 3 phones or 2 phones and 2 airpods, plus an Apple Watch) is actually incredibly convenient for my situation where my wife and I both have phones that use wireless charging. That means with 2 cables and a charging pad that’s thin enough to slide in my backpack, I can have everything I need to charge our phones when we travel.
Anyway, what do you all think? Do you like wireless charging? Do you think it’s actually a beneficial technology that is worth paying more for in your phones?
